Giant chess set from Stewart Island, New Zealand. The island is also known by the maori name Rakiura. The first European to sight the island was Captain James Cook in 1770, though he thought it was part of the South Island and so named it South Cape. The Aurora Australis (southern lights) is also particularly visible from this island because of a geo-magnetic anomaly.
