These are the famous outdoor chess tables on the southwest corner of Washington Square Park, Manhattan neighborhood of Greenwich Village. With the presence of a number of chess shops in the near vicinity the area is also known as the Manhattan "chess district". The location was used in the film "Searching for Bobby Fischer" (1993), based on the book by the same name, about Josh Waitzkin.

There have been many famous chess players, and celebrities, who have ventured to Washington Square park. For example, this link shows GM Hikaru Nakamura looking for a game.
